Network speed test

When the internet crawls,
find out who to blame.

Every speed test tells you a number. Pulse tells you a verdict — is it your Wi‑Fi, your router, your ISP, or the wider internet — and hands you the evidence to do something about it.

Speed test verdict: it's not your gear, the trouble starts at your ISP — with per-hop latency

A verdict, not a number

859 Mbps down means nothing if your video call still stutters. When a test finishes, the headline literally answers the question you had: "It's not your gear — the trouble starts at your ISP." Wi‑Fi weak? It says move closer. Router queuing under load? It names bufferbloat and points at SQM. ISP degraded? You now have timestamped evidence for the support call.

The path, watched under load

While the line is saturated, Pulse keeps timing every leg separately — your Mac, your router, your ISP's edge, the internet beyond. That's where the truth lives: a connection that's snappy idle and balloons by 200 ms under load is why calls fall apart while downloads look fine. You get bufferbloat letter grades for download and upload, responsiveness (RPM), jitter, and per-segment packet loss.

It knows your normal

Every test is stored on your Mac, and the verdict engine compares against your own history, not a global average. If today's download is 60% of your usual, the result says so — "below your usual ~880" — which is exactly the sentence that gets an ISP technician dispatched.

Honest about what it can't see

A router that ignores ping isn't reported as broken; it's noted as a router that ignores ping. A phase that moved no data shows a dash, never a made-up zero. Numbers you can't trust are worse than no numbers, so Pulse never invents any.

Under the hoodLoad via parallel HTTPS streams against Apple's measurement infrastructure (Cloudflare fallback), reported as the median of the stable stretch. Latency-under-load via continuous ICMP to gateway, ISP edge, and internet anchors. In-process traceroute, no privileges required. Bufferbloat thresholds follow Waveform's grading; RPM follows Apple's responsiveness metric.

Settle the "is it our internet?" argument.
